Having become aware of the impacts of these recent happenings, UNSA Maastricht and SCOPE feel the need to discuss the recent developments of the revolts of youths around the globe with the student community. UNDER THE OFFICIAL PATRONAGE OF THE EUROPEAN PARILIAMENT, UNSA and SCOPE present “Youth in Unrest”- a series of lectures and debates dealing with the background and reasons for protest. Moderated by Harm Hospers, Dean of the University College Maastricht, speakers from diverse backgrounds such as MEPs, NGOs and established academics, are given the opportunity to discuss their argument with each other and the audience in order to elaborate on the future and consequences all of us, as citizens of the world, are to expect.
...
In 2011 the whole world watched with bated breath dramatic incidents happening on several continents.Especially young people stood up against the systems and dictatorships domineering their life ever since. Protestors were even willing to give their lives for their idea of a better. While civilians in the Middle East fought a bloody civil war, youths in the US and Europe detected another, more abstract threat – turbo capitalism and an insatiable financial industry – careless about sustainable welfare and job creation!? Occupy Wall Street remembered politicians painfully that civil obedience with an inconvenient economic system can easily collapse and worldwide resistance is feasible via facebook and twitter.

First Event, 8th February 2012:
The Voice of Occupy: Did Western Capitalism Fail? The first event deals with the Western system of parliamentarian democracy and liberal market economy. The participants discuss whether the players in our current political and economic systems still fulfill their tasks in a pleasant way from the perspective of the average voter and citizen, especially with regard to desires of young people. In particular, the dynamics of youth protests as well as the individual in the crisis of Western economies will get granular on, as these can be seen as nearly the most crucial reasons behind the recent developments.
Second Event, 15th February 2012:
The Destiny of Middle East: Youth Fighting for Liberty! The second event will think outside the box of Western European and US problems. In spring 2011 the world witnessed the upheaval of Northern African and Middle East nations against dictatorships dominating their nations- to the surprise of many observers. To these uprisings youths contributed a crucial part. Trapped in poverty and unemployment while at the same time vested with goo judgment, common sense and education they did not see another way than to step up to the plate. Our second event is going to concentrate on the Egyptian and Iranian societies, compare them and give an outlook about the destiny of these two nations.
